BNB was issued by the global cryptocurrency exchange Binance through a July 2017 ICO described in its whitepaper, originally deployed as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and positioned as a utility token powering exchange fee discounts and the broader Binance ecosystem.
In 2019 BNB migrated to a dedicated chain built by Binance, and today it operates as the native gas token of BNB Smart Chain, a network secured by Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus with roughly 3-second block times. Its circulating supply is continuously reduced through the BEP-95 real-time burn and a quarterly auto-burn mechanism, targeting a final supply of 100 million BNB.
